How are custom mouthguards created?

First, impressions will be taken to create the custom fit of your mouthguard. Our office takes digital impressions, which are quick and do not require biting down into a tray of goopy dental putty. Your impressions will be sent to an off-site lab, and we should receive your new mouthguard in approximately one to two weeks. We’ll have you come in for a quick appointment to try on the mouthguard, our team will make any necessary adjustments, and then you are free to take your new mouthguard home and begin wearing it.

Do I need a custom mouthguard?

We recommend custom athletic mouthguards for patients who are involved in aggressive contact sports like football, soccer, or rugby. The custom fit of an athletic mouthguard means that patients can wear them for hours at a time with less discomfort than a mouthguard that is one-size-fits-all. If you frequently clench or grind your teeth at night, a custom nightguard for bruxism can also be an excellent investment. Patients are more likely to wear a custom nightguard that fits well, which protects their teeth from serious damage.

Are custom mouthguards expensive?

Custom mouthguards cost more than one-size mouthguards that you can find at the store due to the fact that they are designed specifically for each individual patient. However, they can be a great investment for patients who need to wear mouthguards regularly. Restorative services that are used to treat damaged teeth are far more invasive and costly than wearing a custom mouthguard, which is why we frequently recommend our mouthguard services to patients.
