When should children visit the dentist??

Kids should visit the dentist twice per year, just like adults. The American Dental Association recommends that a baby’s first dentist appointment be scheduled around their first birthday or when their first tooth grows in, whichever happens first. If your child ever needs to see a dentist outside of their scheduled visits, our office accepts same-day emergency appointments. Establishing a dental home for your child helps ensure that they are creating positive dental habits and taking care of their teeth from a young age, which will help them now and in the future!

What dental services do kids need?

Kids need regular cleanings and exams to remove built-up plaque and tartar and to allow our team to assess their teeth and gums so that potential problems can be diagnosed and treated. We also recommend that kids have dental sealants applied over their molars and regular fluoride treatments scheduled to keep their teeth healthy, strong, and (hopefully) free of tooth decay. Athletic children can also benefit from having an athletic mouthguard made to protect their teeth. Otherwise, the services your child receives will be customized based on their unique needs.

How can I help my child have positive experiences at the dentist?

When a child is in a new situation, they often look to their parents or other role models to see how they should act and respond. We always recommend that parents speak to their kids about dental care in a positive way, emphasize the importance of taking care of their teeth, and praise them for cooperating. Our team is also happy to talk to our younger patients and explain our procedures in a kid-friendly way to take some of the mystery out of dentistry. They can also request a pillow and blanket and put on their favorite show to help their dental visit fly by!
